Kim Jaejoong: “I do not deny being an ‘idol’”

Some members of many idol groups, who attempt an image transformation, used to say that ‘I want to shake off idol image’. It means that they want to break from the limitative image that an idol carries. But sometimes, it might be interpreted to mean that they are denying their own origin.
Therefore, “I want to keep being called ‘idol’”, those words of JYJ’s member Kim Jaejoong come up with a fresh feeling. Kim Jaejoong said, “Even SMAP in Japan is appraised as idol for over 20 years. Being called idol is not bad. However, the important thing is what kind of idol we should become.”
Then, Kim Jaejoong added, “I want to be an idol that can be loved by all age groups, not merely an idol who sings, dances and has a great look. And so I’m working hard to get ready for the image of a singer-songwriter by directly composing songs, writing lyrics and producing music.”
Kim Jaejoong has a new challenge ahead. He was casted in SBS’s new Wed-Thus mini-series <Protect the Boss>. This is the first time he challenges with domestic drama. He already has experience in acting with movie <Heaven’s Postman> and Japanese drama <It’s hard to say I love you>.
With <Protect the Boss>, he isn’t taking his first step in the domestic stage as a member of idol group JYJ but as ‘actor Kim Jaejoong’. In the drama, he plays Cha Muwon, a chaebol who is called ‘The Prince of Financial World’. Kim Jaejoong who received a lot of love calls (of other projects), why did he choose <Protect the Boss>?
Kim Jaejoong begins to talk, “The were some projects which made myself feel greedy.” “But there were also projects that I couldn’t participate because of schedules conflict. I received the script of <Protect the Boss> toward the end of the World Tour. I think it’s very interesting. It’s a drama which delivery a positive message. (Laugh) My character is a gentleman, who is proficient in business. Although he is a little different from me, I found him attractive.”
Kim Jaejoong showed a pretty cautious side of him during the interview. After receiving the questions, he thought about them for awhile then uninterruptedly shared his sincere stories, little by little. He expressed his true thoughts, “It has been a long time since I first entered in the entertainment world. But in the acting field, I’m just a newcomer. Since I’m still unfamiliar with this environment, I’m being very careful in order to do not make any mistake. Although I have done many interviews, this is my first interview as an actor. Therefore, I’m very nervous.”
Kim Jaejoong went through a long period of preparation. Despite the fact that his co-group members Kim Junsu has successfully become a musical actor and Park Yoochun did a very good job in dramas <SungKyunKwan Scandal> and <Miss Ripley>, Kim Jaejoong didn’t rush but diligently prepared for his next step. Answering to the question “Don’t you get any stimulation by watching Yoochun (in dramas)?” Kim Jaejoong said, “I’m really glad that it turned out great. And I also feel that I need to work hard. There wasn’t special advice but he encouraged me by saying ‘You will suffer a lot’.
Kim Jaejoong who is standing at the halfway point between ‘Top singer’ and ‘Rookie actor’, after about 10 years, where could he be standing? Kim Jaejoong said with a smile, “Even after 10 years, wouldn’t I still be a singer”. It means that he don’t want to leave his homeland. He expressed strong-mindedly, “There are still many things that I want to do. Aside from singing and acting, I also want to properly try to study stage directing. There are many things to do as a singer too. I don’t ever want to give up being singer. About acting, I can’t say anything yet because I just took my first step. But in 10 years, I want to show to everyone a Kim Jaejoong who can do his best in various fields.”
